It’s a Boy…thank you Baby Bumps!

its a boy 1

This is a beautiful story written by one of our contributing writers and her road to motherhood (for the 2nd time) and how Baby Bumps in Saratoga helped determine the babys gender at only 16 weeks.

My husband and I began a rollercoaster of a year last September when we found out we were expecting a child.  Excited and nervous we visited the OB and successfully heard the little heartbeat at 11 weeks.  Assuming at this point we were “safe” we began telling our friends and family, as well as our 5 year old daughter that we would be having a baby in our near future.  Just two weeks later we miscarried.  Confused and hurt, we decided to try again and on Christmas Eve we began the cycle over.   From the beginning I had a feeling of terrible fear and doubt, if not a depression that I just could not shake.

Again we visited the OB, heard the heartbeat, printed the ultrasound photo and told our family.  Still, I just did not feel right.  At 13 weeks, just a few days before our daughter turned 6, I visited the OB for what was expected to be another routine appointment.   As I looked at the ultrasound through the hand-held mirror, I expected to record a wiggling baby with hand and foot buds.  I told myself to stop being paranoid.  I had no reason to believe things were not going well.   But the baby on the screen was still.  There was no wiggling, no fluttering, and no detectable heartbeat.  After planning my 2nd D and C within 5 months, I hated going home to my family with the sad news.

My doctor encouraged us to try again and within 8 week we were pregnant with a little extra support of progesterone treatments.   The OB pulled us in for a few extra visits to calm my nerves and we passed the 12 and 13 week marks into the “safe zone.”  Both my husband and I remained cautious.  We decided that we would really allow ourselves to get excited once we could determine the gender.   I am not sure why that became the milestone, but it may be that it was a milestone that we did not make the previous two pregnancies.

Based on the scheduling of my OB I would have to wait until I was 22 weeks.  Talking to a few of my friends I learned about Baby Bumps, LLC in Saratoga where I could opt for an elective ultrasound.   After visiting their website I was so excited to plan my gender determination visit about 1 week later…at just 16 WEEKS!!!

Its a boy 2With anticipation, my husband and daughter waited as I walked into the ultrasound room.  To my surprise there were large plush couches with room to sit at least 10, a soothing atmosphere, and a large flat screen on the wall for us to view the ultrasound.  I asked Vanessa to check for a heartbeat before bringing them in…flutters and wiggles filled the screen and we began the fun part of our pregnancy.

The little bean inside of me was rolling around and showing us all of the wrong parts.  I poked my side and we watched the large flat screen on the wall as our little one swatted at my hand.  Amazed, we invited our daughter to poke at her new little sibling to see if she could get it to roll over.   Again we watched the screen as it lifted its hand above its head and pushed back at the spot she had just pushed on, then he rolled over to show us he was a proud little boy!  Instantly the fear and anxiety we had been experiencing for months was replaced with joy and excitement.  I think this photo says it all!

Baby Bumps, LLC offered me a comfort that I thought would be impossible.   As I lay on the table, Vanessa showed us tiny feet, legs, and recorded the sound of the heartbeat for us to take home in a stuffed elephant.  We are planning on heading back at 24-32 weeks for the 3D/4D Ultrasound Experience and to see our son’s little face.

Owners Vanessa and Ann had worked together as registered OB sonographers for over 10 years, and came to the realization that there were no elective 3D/4D ultrasound facilities in the Capital Region.  After doing research, they found that many of our local moms were traveling several hours away for early gender prediction and 3D/4D ultrasounds so in order to offer a local solution, they opened their Washington Street location in Saratoga in November of 2011.

Baby Bumps, LLC offers gender determination 3-4 weeks before it’s typically done in the OB offices.  Besides knowing what color to shop for a little early, moms are sent home with printed photographs and  a Teddy bear or stuffed elephant that plays the sound of their child’s heartbeat.   A DVD of the ultrasound can be purchased as well.  With plenty of room, often there are 8-10 excited family members and friends sharing in the experience together!

Its a boy 3Baby Bumps’ most popular package is their Silver Package, which takes place between 24-32 weeks and includes a DVD recording of the 20 minute 3D/4D session as well as color and black and white pictures.  A CD of the ultrasound pictures can be purchased.

If you are interested in planning an elective ultrasound or know of any mothers that would like more information, you can find more information on their website at http://www.babybumps3d4dultrasound.com or follow them on Facebook.
