My favorite memory is when we would have dance parties in the living room and build forts!
My favorite memory was when I was playing with bubbles with the children that I was looking after. They were very young and I was blowing the bubbles and they were chasing them around the room. Apparently it looked like a lot of fun, because the family Collie wanted to get in on it too and started chasing the bubbles and snapping at the bubbles to catch them in her mouth. What a sight it was to see two preschoolers and a dog all running around the livingroom chasing after bubbles and catching them! If I had a cellphone camera back then it would have made a great video.
My favorite babysitting memory was with this adorable little girl I watched from about 6 weeks old until about 4 years. I loved her so much! As a baby, I started to wake her from her naps by singing the songs “My Girl” and “When I See You Smile”. She had a smile that lit up the world! 12 years after I finished babysitting her, she was a bridesmaid in my wedding … and now she’s the Godmother of my own two children! My how time flies
My favorite memory is of 2 girls that I watched after school every day while their single Mom worked just after their parents got divorced. They moved into our apartment building when the Mom had finally had enough. Their family was just like ours: a single Mom with 2 girls only a couple years apart. It was amazing to watch them grow from shy, scared little girls into smart, funny, confident teenagers. It never struck me at the time, but it was really rewarding to be a part of their development.
I was babysitting two girls and they had their hamster out when I arrived. They were allowed to have the hamster loose in the living room. I was so nervous they were going to lose. Finally one of them decided it was a good idea to get the cage and put him away. Great! I was so relieved. The next thing I hear is crash. The little girls had tried carrying a 35 gallon aquarium down the stairs all by herself. Not what I had envisioned when she said cage. She was fine, but now the hamster had nowhere to be. I cleaned up all of the glass and had my father bring over a matching aquarium that we had used when we were children for our own hamsters. Despite the disaster we got the hamster back into his home and he was none the wiser. The girls went to sleep and you wouldn’t have known anything had happened. God was with me that night.
It was the summer after I graduated high school and I was babysitting for two girls everyday. In preparation for college, my parents had bought me a computer – complete with webcam. The Spice Girls were big at this time, so the girls and I each dressed up as a different Spice Girl – I was Posh, the older sister was Sporty, the younger was Baby, and the family dog was Scary – and made “music videos” with my new webcam. (We lived two houses down, so it was easy to bring them to my house.) We danced around the room and lip-synced to “Wannabe”, with the dog running around the room in circles barking at us like crazy. I just wish I had the energy as a mom that I had as a babysitter!!!
I don’t have a specific memory of the kids but of my friends and I desperately wanting to be just like the “Babysitter’s Club” Books! I may have read all of them when I was younger. We had the note book, meeting hours and specific calling hours for parents to make reservations. We thought we were so cool!
I was a nanny for years before I had my son, and I took care of this one little boy who was probably about 2 at the time. He was always flushing things down the toilet (matchbox cars, his father’s gold watch) or getting into his brother’s fingerprinting kit and smearing ink all over his face. But the best was when he was supposed to be taking a nap, and I discovered that he’d found vaseline in his room and smeared it all over himself, including in his hair. So I brought him in the bathroom and told him he needed a bath and to have his hair washed. I went to get a towel, and when I came back, he was using a cup to pour water from the toilet onto his head. He was washing his hair. It’s a miracle I still wanted kids after that job.
I didn’t babysit much and this is why. I was baby sitting my cousins one day and they were horrible. I put them on time out and they kept getting up and calling their mom, who would tell me they didn’t need time out. It was horrible and as a kid decided I’d never be that mom!!
One of my favorite memories of babysitting was when my charge got out of bed and found a permanent marker. He wrote all over himself with the black ink while he was supposed to be asleep. I went up to check on him and noticed a line across his forehead. I called his parents right away (good thing they were relatives). We all still laugh about it now years later. His mother and I scrubbed him so hard to get the ink off he started to cry he would never do this again.
My favorite memory is when watching my niece and nephew – we would move furniture around and build forts using blankets and pillows. We would drape the blankets over the furniture and make secret passages and peep holes. The kids used their imaginations pretending they were in a tree house or on a ship or in a castle or in a tent in the forest. Sometimes they would just relax inside on the pillows with flashlights and read books. We had some amazing adventures!
My favorite and funniest babysitting story was when my friend and I were teenagers watching 3 kids and we had to let their scary dog into the house because it started to rain. The dog was not a calm dog and neither one of us wanted to go near it, so we thought it would be wise to let the 5yr old boy bring the dog into the basement. Needless to say, the dog knocked down the boy and ran free in the house while the five of us ran and hid in the kids closet. After several minutes of freaking out and hearing the dog wimper and pant around the house, we came up with a plan. My friend was going to lure the dog down to the basement and I would close the door after she escaped the dog. Mind you I had a baby on my hip the whole time and almost got knocked down the stairs because of the dog. The plan worked except I ended up locking my friend in the basement, leaving her alone with the dog because she couldn’t get to the door since the dog was blocking it. Fortunately, she was able to hide in the basement bathroom and call the kids parents to come rescue us from the “killer” dog. Every time we babysat for that family something hysterical always happened, but it never kept us away!
Years ago – babysitting my niece – I took out my camera – and we played dress-up. She would put on different outfits, or necklaces, hats, glasses, etc… and pose in silly ways for the camera. It was a blast!
My favorite babysitting memory is when I was watching a brother and sister who were 6 and 3. It was a snowy Saturday afternoon and I was watching them all day while their parents hit the slopes. We played outside and made snow men, snow angels and sledding all afternoon which was followed by hot chocolate, cookies and a movie all snuggled on the couch!
my favorite memory is having our neighbor from across the street (approx 75 yrs old!) come babysit for all of us. It was half the family home (sometimes 5, sometimes 6 kids!)…and as soon as my parents left Bessy would get out her 300 page romance novel and begin to read. She would not put down her book until my parents arrived back home. Every once in a while she’d raise an eyebrow to see if anybody broke an arm or leg, but as long as we were okay, she was okay. We would have costume parties, jumping contests…and so much more. We loved the freedom she gave us while watching us from behind her very long book!
My favorite memory is when I was being babysat, we had 4 local girls who would all come and rotate getting paid! They would bring me everywhere, baseball games, movies, plays. It was like having 4 big sisters, as I was an only child. We called them the ‘Kiddos’
I loved babysitting my younger cousin who at the time was in the infant -toddler stage. She was so adorable. We would have our playtime, story time, and tv time. However, my favorite part about our evenings together was the snuggling! She was just so precious! She would fall asleep in my arms, and with just the sound of her breathing she could and did put me to sleep. My Aunt would come home to the two of us would be bundled together :O)
Right after high school I became a preschool teacher. One particular little girl, Chelsea, was one of my favorites. I know, you aren’t supposed to admit that, but she was so spunky and sweet you just had to love her. Chelsea and I had such a great bond that I soon became her babysitter too. One night her parents had tickets to a special event that they needed to attend because of work. Unfortunately Chelsea and I both came down with chickenpox a couple nights before the event. I told the parents that Chelsea and I would be fine and to go ahead and go. We were covered in blisters all over our face, our bodies, and even in our mouths, but we didn’t let that stop us. We had so much fun that night. We played connect the dots on my face and turned an oatmeal bath for Chelsea into a bubble bath. We even had fun using calamine lotion as finger paints on her belly. When her parents came home Chelsea went on and on about all of the fun we had. The parents laughed at me and told me that I was the only person they knew that could make chickenpox a fun experience. It meant so much to me that I helped Chelsea feel better and at the same time let her parents feel comfortable leaving her at home.
I babysat for many families but I will always remember having to put these two kids to bed. The older boy would go right to sleep, the younger daughter not so much. I would put Doritos all over her bed and pillow. (Of course I had brushed her teeth before this.). I would get her to sit in bed and she would eat the Doritos and usually fall asleep. After she was asleep I would have to sneak back in to her room and clean her up and the bed from the Dorito crumbs. I can remember one night hearing the garage door open and scrambling to get the little girl cleaned up I was running out of her room with wet paper towels stuffed in my pockets as the parents came in the house.
I remember babysitting during th summer Olympics in 96 and I recreated the games for the boys…they loved it and so did I. I even made them medals!
Thank you – The Show was fantastic!!!
