I just heard that Radio Disney artist Joey Page will be performing on Friday, August 14, 2009 at the Altamont Fair and thought it would be a good thing to include on your calendar. I took my family last year and Joey Page was there and as a mom of 4 ages 8 to 14 we all had a lot of fun - even me and my husband! We got to meet Joey after the show and the kids thought it was great and so did I because it was free - haha. I believe the show starts at 8:00 p.m. As a cheap way to vacation this summer, my family took a short road trip to another fair in the area (within a short drive) and everyone had a great time so we are doing it again and I thought it would be great to share the idea with other moms that want a cheap vacation close to home. With this economy we have gotten back to the basics and the local fairs are really an old fashion way to have a fun family event without spending a lot of money. Thanks!

We loved Big Truck Day this morning .... so happy that we went :-)

Hello! In addition to our holiday events for families (more on those later), the Columbia County Historical Society is pleased to announce a series of events for kids this holiday season:

December 5th, 10am-4pm (drop in program)
Kids Crafts- Decorating the Tree: A Handmade History
With the huge selection of Christmas ornaments available for purchase today, it is hard to imagine that Columbia County residents once hand-crafted ornaments to adorn their Christmas trees-- often using recycled household items. Shiny ornaments were especially favored since they reflected the light. Try your hand at making a variety of different historic ornaments to decorate your tree. $5 per child, $10 per family, members FREE

December 6th and 13th, 1pm and 3pm
'Twas the Night Before Christmas, an interactive reading for Kids
Many know "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" as the poem by Clement C. Moore, but some say it was written by Columbia County's own Henry Livingston. Children will enjoy this interactive reading of the poem, as they help to decorate a Christmas tree in preparation for Santa's arrival. Geared toward kids 4 to 8 and their families. FREE.

December 12th, 10am-4pm (drop in program)
Kids Crafts: Food and Celebration
Food has long been an important part of holiday celebrations in many cultures. In fact, it is hard to think of Christmas without Christmas cookies! After trying your hand at rolling, molding, and cutting dough, decorate a cookie ornament for the tree. Geared toward children ages 6-10 and their families. $5 per child, $10 per family, members FREE

All events will be held at the James Vanderpoel House, 16 Broad St., Kinderhook, NY. The house will be decorated for the holidays, and feature a greens show by the garden clubs of Columbia County, a Gallery of Wreaths (which will be auctioned off to benefit the society), and a crafts boutique featuring local artisans. Visit www.cchsny.org, call 518-758-9265, or find us on facebook for more details.

May 1st is Fort Johnson's 3rd Annual Village Wide Garage Sale and Giffy's Chicken BBQ. The chicken BBQ is a fundraiser for the Fort Johnson Youth Commission.
